Unidentified Duck! Anybody any ideas?

Can anybody confirm the identity of this fella. We suspect it is a Merganser?

Doesn't look quite right for a merganser, but more like one than anything else in our guide.

Beak shape and tail are OK, but the colours, as far as can be seen, aren't right for either the normal or the eclipse plumage.

Could be a cross breed, of course, always the problem with duck IDs.
