Bluff – New Zealand’s oldest settlement.

After a night of continuous heavy rain and strong wind gusts, we were a little slow leaving this morning but were soon on our way to Bluff.  The settlement dates back to 1824 when it was foundered by James Spencer.  The largest industry here now is the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter at the entrance to Bluff Harbour. The company which is one of New Zealand's largest industrial facilities and employs a large number of the population here. The power is supplied by the Manapouri Power Station which is on our must see list.
